I want to share with you one of the best-kept secrets in Rotterdam—and if you are a bookworm like I am, you will thank me.
On a quiet street in the south of Rotterdam, there is a bookstore—and not just any bookstore.
Directly from their website:
“Reading Room Vreewijk” (Leeszaal Vreewijk) was founded in 2015. The concept is simple: books you no longer read can be brought to the reading room, where you can exchange them for other books. You can then swap these books again, return them, keep them, or pass them on. We are not a library. Our aim is to promote reading and the enjoyment of reading. We have a collection of books for all ages. There are books in both Dutch and English.
Accessibility
The reading room is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
There is an adapted toilet available.
Five books are the standard number you are allowed to take. Taking more books is almost always possible upon request.
Reading Room Vreewijk is a legal entity in the form of a foundation.
Telephone: +31 (0)10 750 3531
Stichting Leeszaal Vreewijk is located at Groenezoom 275 B, 3075 GE in Rotterdam, near the Witte Paard.
Opening hours:
Leeszaal Vreewijk: Tuesday–Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00
https://leeszaalvreewijk.nl/
But that’s not all. Just a few meters from Leeszaal Vreewijk, you can also find “Het Depot,” another bookstore using the same concept.
Their other shop, “Het Depot,” is located about 200 meters further along at number 281 B.
Het Depot: Tuesday–Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00
Many volunteers make it possible for this place to exist.
I have been enjoying not only the great selection of reading material but also the warm hospitality of all the volunteers working there.
If you, like me, think this is a great concept, you can even become a supporter and make a donation, as I have been doing for the past few years.
I could go on and on… Just pay it a visit and enjoy!
